Late spring and summer: the trade-offs

From May onwards southern Europe, much of Asia and the Middle East get hot, and prices rise in popular summer spots. If you work remotely you can be flexible and choose cooler, quieter or cheaper bases.

Good options for May to September

  • Estonia (Tallinn): Long daylight hours, fast internet and a digital nomad visa. Summers are mild.
  • Slovenia and Austria: Alpine towns with excellent infrastructure and outdoor activities.
  • Scotland and Ireland: Cool weather, strong broadband in cities and English-speaking communities.
  • Poland and Czech Republic: Affordable and well connected, with lively city life.
  • Georgia (Tbilisi) and Armenia: Warm and low-cost, and attractive for longer stays.
  • Mexico and Colombia (higher altitude cities): Medellín and Mexico City have mild climates year-round.
  • Canada (Vancouver, Montréal): Summer festivals and nature, though accommodation is pricey.

Places to reconsider in high summer

Southern Spain, southern Italy, Greece and much of Southeast Asia can be very hot or wet. If you want to go there, schedule outdoor time early in the morning and make sure your accommodation has air conditioning.

Working well while travelling

  1. Choose accommodation with a desk and a good Wi-Fi report.
  2. Test the connection on arrival and carry a backup.
  3. Agree your working hours with colleagues to cope with time zone changes.
  4. Keep a base for at least three to four weeks to avoid burnout.
  5. Use coworking spaces to meet people.

Legal basics

Check whether your destination offers a digital nomad visa and how long you can stay as a tourist. Do not assume you can work legally on a standard tourist stay.
