What rankings measure
Tourist satisfaction rankings usually combine traveller reviews, safety, affordability, transport, food, attractions and sometimes crowding or sustainability. Methods differ, so a city can rank high on one list and low on another.
Cities that often appear near the top
- Tokyo, Japan: Safety, cleanliness, food and transport are frequently praised.
- Singapore: Efficient, clean and easy to navigate.
- Lisbon and Porto, Portugal: Good value, friendly locals and beautiful streets.
- Vienna, Austria: Culture, café life and safety.
- Copenhagen, Denmark: Design, bikes and food, but high prices.
- Melbourne, Australia: Food and culture.
What they have in common
- Walkable centres with quality public transport.
- Good food at different price levels.
- A feeling of safety.
- Variety: museums, parks, markets and nightlife.
- Clear information for visitors.
How to use rankings
Look at the criteria. If you value budget, check how affordability was scored. If you travel with kids, look at family-friendly rankings. And remember that a city that suits others may not suit you.
Build your own scorecard
Write down what matters most (food, nature, culture, budget, weather), give each city a score for those items and decide yourself.
Rankings change each year, so use them as inspiration and not as a rule.
