Rules differ a lot

Some countries welcome drones with simple registration. Others ban them outright or require permits. Penalties can include fines, confiscation or worse.

Before you travel

  1. Check the national aviation authority's website for the country you are visiting.
  2. Register your drone if required. The EU has a common system, and many other countries have their own.
  3. Buy insurance that covers drone use.
  4. Check airline rules for lithium batteries.

Common restrictions

  • No flying near airports, military sites, government buildings or crowds.
  • National parks and heritage sites often forbid drones.
  • Height limits, commonly around 120 m (400 ft).
  • Keep the drone in sight.
  • Privacy laws protect people from being filmed.

Use apps and maps

Several apps show no-fly zones, but they may be incomplete. Treat them as a guide, not a guarantee.

Be a considerate pilot

Ask permission from landowners, avoid wildlife and fly at quiet times. If in doubt, don't fly.

Drone laws change frequently, so confirm them with the official authority before each trip.
