Types of charter
- Bareboat: You rent the boat and sail it yourself. You need qualifications and experience.
- Skippered charter: A professional skipper sails the boat, and you relax or help.
- Crewed charter: Includes a skipper and sometimes a cook or other crew. More expensive.
- Cabin charter: Book a cabin on a shared boat, which is the cheapest way to try sailing.
- Flotilla sailing: A group of boats sailing together with a lead crew, good for beginners.
Where to go
Popular areas include Croatia, Greece, Turkey, the Balearic Islands, the British Virgin Islands and the Whitsundays. Mediterranean options are cheaper outside July and August.
Saving money
- Sail in shoulder season, such as May, June, September and October.
- Share the cost with friends or family.
- Provision locally and cook on board.
- Choose a smaller or older boat.
- Check extras: fuel, marina fees, skipper, cleaning and insurance deposits.
Safety
